Success for Building Skills Bursaries Scheme at York Minster

Matthew Hodgkinson, who was the first bursary holder in the Traditional Building Skills Bursary Scheme has now become a full time member of staff in the York Minster Stoneyard. Matthew started in the Carvers’ workshop at York Minster on a six month placement funded by the Traditional Building Skills Bursary Scheme. This placement finished in January 2008 but Matthew’s work has been of such a high standard, that he has now become a permanent member of the Stoneyard workforce.
Matthew is thrilled to now be a full time member of staff in York Minster’s Stoneyard and said: “I’m really pleased that the Bursary Scheme has given me the opportunity to develop my carving skills in this environment , it’s a privilege to be a part of restoring this amazing building”.
The Traditional Building Skills Bursary scheme, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund is now offering a six month placement for a masonry trainee in the York Minster Works’ Department. The closing date for applications to be considered for this placement is Monday 31 st March 2008.
